Talking writers by J.D Salinger
I found myself standing in front of a bookshelf, talking in what turned into a monologue on why books are fantastic. I looked lovingly at ‘Death and the Penguin‘, patting it a bit. My book collection and the way each one is a little world of wordy goodness makes me extraordinarily happy. I really can understand why Kindles are good, but to suggest that they might replace books makes me sad. And suspect that these people heralding the death of books are very wrong. Perhaps in a hundred years this [no longer online] blog post will be laughable, but I like to think that the future isn’t cold and weird, and people still stand in front of bookshelves and pet books sentimentally.
In other news, a good quote from J.D Salinger which makes me happy for many reasons:
“In any really thoughtful list of blights and scurges of our time, talking writers, surely ought to be somewhere up very close to the top. I mean it.”
Says a lovely letter from J.D Salinger to a student.
